BK-203
“Olympia 1936” Two Volume Set
Each
has a blue linen cover (12” vertical by 9.75”)
with some scratches, mostly on the back, with some spots and faint discoloration
to the bindings where they were exposed to light for years on a bookshelf. “Olympia
1936” is printed in black ink on both. Volume
One (Band I) reads “The Olympic Winter Games Preview of Berlin” (covers the
winter sports). Volume
Two (Band II) reads “The XI Olympic Games in Berlin”. I
can only find one damaged bottom page corner out of both books.
This is a fantastic set! Both
volumes are in nice condition and filled with many actual pasted-in
photographs (a few have come loose but are still in the books) of Olympic
events, participants, and teams, Olympic committee members, etc.
There are also diagrams of venues and colored insignia for the countries
taking part. Many
German military contestants appear in the pictures (particularly interesting are
the equestrian events and the ‘Military Ski Patrol’). Both volumes
also provide winner’s tables within the sections for each sport…curious to
know who won the High Jump? The American athlete Cornelius Johnson did, at a
height of 2.03 meters. The
pictures also include a shot of Jesse Owens and other United States athletes. Volume
One includes a chronological history of the previous Olympiads, and information
on the German’s Olympic site construction and sport organization. At the
back of Volume One there is a complete table of the German medal
winners by medal grade (Gold, Silver, Bronze). Volume
Two even has a colored, fold-out map of the entire Berlin Olympic site. Total
of 296 pages. Super
set!
