C-035 Army Slip-On Shoulder Board Set for a Panzer
Leutnant with “8” Ciphers, and Field-Made Slip-On “Shrouds” (Slide
Loops)
A real interesting set of boards, though with definite wear to the
matte aluminum braid surface (especially the edges of the bottom ends) - even
some discoloration. The pink underlay may have been exposed to something
undesirable at one point, which faded the color somewhat, and even led to the
pigment bleeding slightly into the braid (hence the discoloration). Each board
has a gilt cipher “8” (gilding seems near 100%) - 8th Panzer Regiment was
part of the 15th Panzer Division – though the ciphers are concealed by very
tight-fitting green cotton twill, field made “shrouds” – similar to
the issue sliding cloth loops (but not made of felt) – for security purposes.
The original slip-on securing straps appear to have been replaced with slip-on
tabs made from the same green twill cloth as the shrouds – a fabric decidedly
stronger than the original wool/felt would have been. The shrouds could be taken
off the boards, but have been in place for so long that the shape of the “8”
ciphers below them is visible in relief on the fabric itself as if it were
molded over them. Very neat!
