Luftwaffe DIENSTSTELLUNGSABZEICHEN (Trade / Specialist Insignia):
Also known as “Tätigkeitsabzeichen”, these “distinguishing specialist” or “trade” insignia were authorized for wear on the lower left sleeve by Luftwaffe NCOs and privates who were classed as specialists, or who served in a specialist career (Laufbahn). The system was somewhat similar to the trade and rating system used by the Navy (also worn on the sleeve), and considerable similarity to the system used by the Army (though the latter service seems to have had fewer ratings, and was more sparing in its use of them). The authorization to wear such “Dienststellungsabzeichen” was only granted upon successfully concluded examinations at the end of special training courses – or after transfer to a specialist position officially authorized (according to the unit’s “Table of Organization & Equipment” – or “T.O.&E.”) such an insignia – or, in the case of some badges, after a specifically defined time period within the specialist’s position.

These badges were usually machine embroidered in greyish-white or silvery-white thread directly onto a grey, or “fliegerblau” (flyer’s blue – i.e. the Luftwaffe’s standard greyish-blue color) wool-felt backing patch. The backing itself was usually round, and in some cases, oblong (longer in a horizontal direction). Examples hand embroidered in aluminum bullion are usually privately purchased pieces for wear on a dress uniform and were not officially authorized.

NOTE: For some of these insignia, I may have more than one example and have so indicated in this case. Please note that photos show only one example – but the actual pieces may vary in the color shade of the backing wool, or materials (manufacturing variations); rest assured that the item you receive will be of equal quality in terms of condition, however, to the one pictured. The patches are in excellent, unissued condition unless otherwise noted.

KRIEGSMARINE (NAVY) RATING AND RANK PATCHES

These intriguing patches were worn on the left sleeve of the blue uniform, the metal version generally being the type found on the pea coat, also (less often but occasionally) on the service tunic. The patch included a gilt anchor, which indicated a Junior NCO (Petty Officer) grade, with a career rating insignia superimposed. The rating indicated the career field in which the NCO was serving. The addition of a “V” chevron below the anchor indicated a higher rank of Chief Petty Officer. The dark navy blue felt oval background (almost black) patch measures anywhere from approximately 3.5” to 3.75” from top to bottom, depending on whether or not there is a chevron beneath the anchor. The insignia itself is usually made from a stamped zinc base metal, with a gilded finish over it. The reverse has an oval metal backing plate, normally covered by a glued-on oval sheet, (various fabrics) colored deep navy blue, black, or purple-blue.

Ruptured Duck Tidbit...The vast majority of items listed in this section are the type that were manufactured and/or distributed at the clothing depot at Dachau. A large amount of cloth was sent home by the GIs who liberated this camp in late April of 1945.
