D-001  Letter from the Reichsminister and Chief of the Reichs Chancellery Dr. Hans Lammers
Please Note:  we have added text to the photos below (in red) to clarify the signature name on the document.  These DO NOT appear on the actual document
Lammers - an attorney by profession - eventually came to run the Reichskanzlei, and also served as the Party’s top legal advisor. From 1937 he was a member of the cabinet, a  “Reichsminister without portfolio” and from 1939, was also on the Council of Ministers for Defense of the Reich.  In his capacity as the head of the Chancellery, he was (together with Bormann) a “go-to guy”, if you wanted to arrange an audience with the Führer (Lammers and Bormann controlled access to Hitler). His party number was around the 1,010,000 range, so he was a later member. Starting in 1943, he served as president of the cabinet when Hitler was away. In April of 1945, Lammers was arrested (presumably by the SS) in connection with Göring’s betrayal of Hitler, but then released. On May 8, his wife (and his daughter two days later) committed suicide in Obersalzburg. Lammers was captured and tried at Nuremberg; sentenced to 20 years imprisonment (later reduced to 10), he was actually released in 1952, dying in 1962, in Düsseldorf.  This document measures nearly 12” by 8” (i.e. A4 paper size), and is a brief note to Hewel on official “Reichsminister and Head of the Chancellery” letterhead with embossed eagle, offering him good wishes on his birthday. The signature is original (not an autopen). The slightest yellowing to the edges, a horizontal center fold, and a two-hole punch along the left edge, nonetheless an outstanding document!
