D-107 Wehrpaß
and Soldbuch for SS Medical Rottenführer Ignatz Gundelach, Assigned to the
LSSAH
Very interesting pair of documents, with nicely corresponding
entries. Grundelach volunteered for and was accepted by the Waffen-SS in 1941.
He was assigned as a medic, and his training entries in the Wehrpass show a
course for “Verwundetenträger” (carrier / bearer of wounded) – an
interesting term when compared to that used on the white military armband for
Assistant/Auxiliary Stretcher Bearers. The entries provide the usual personal
information, induction details, Unit assignments (position of one of these is
noted as Oranienburg), promotion (highest rank reached was SS-Rottenführer, in
1944) dates, qualified weapons, and so on. His awards entries indicate he
received an Iron Cross 2nd Class. The Wehrpass photo shows Grundelach in civies,
while the somewhat worn, and lightly soiled Soldbuch photo shows him in uniform
(dark blue green collar). The Wehrpass shows light wear, but is overall in
pretty good condition other than for a slight bend crease and some wear to the
spine tape, with a clean interior. The Soldbuch shows considerable wear from
heavy use, the greyish-brown paper cover is nearly illegible with a frayed
leading edge; it has separated completely from the book. On the other hand, the
picture of Grundelach is pretty solid, with both runic and rank collar patches
clearly visible. The interior pages are worn with darkened, slightly rounded
edges and lightly dog-eared corners; the very first page is missing a portion of
the upper right corner. There is some moderate soiling and light staining, but
with only minimal impact on legibility. The last Unit entry clearly indicates
LSSAH, so this medic served with the 1st SS Panzer Division during part of his
time in uniform. If the wear to the book came from his service time, then he was
definitely out in the field quite a bit! Also included with these two books is a
grouping of four photos, three of which were taken the same day, and show the
soldiers wearing Filzstiefel! The fourth and larger picture shows a number of
recruits, with their cadre man standing behind them (hand in his tunic closure
edge like Napoleon). Sitting directly in front of him is Gundelach. Note that
none of the recruits have any collar patches – though they do wear sleeve
eagles. Very cool document group!
