D-117  Army Document Grouping (Wehrpaß and Four Documents) for Medical Officer (Unterarzt) Dr. Kurt Khälss
Dr. Khälß (“ß” – “ss”) came from the Salzburg (Austria) area, and was apparently a member of the Austrian nobility (landed Gentry – “Landsadel”), since the title  “Ritter” (Knight) – has been entered in his Wehrpass along with the rest of his name: “von Khälssberg”.  It is written in almost as an afterthought, or so it looks - very interesting, since under Nazi philosophy there was no place for the old nobility, who no longer held any special privileges. Dr. Khälß served in the Army as a medical man (first as a medic, then as an Unterarzt) from 1941, through 1944, when he was discharged due to problems with the cartilage in his knees.  The Wehrpass is an excellent example, in super condition; it has a fine photo of Herr Dr. Khälß in a civilian suit - looks a tad snobbish. There is a paper strip affixed to the cloth tape spine, with “Khälss” vertically typed– such strips are not a commonly encountered practice. The book has all the standard entries, including weapons training with P.08 (Luger), 98K rifle, and the Walther P.P. Of the loose documents, two (one is a two-page form) are stored in vinyl sleeves, and so are in very good condition. The two-page document is dated 1942, and presents some medical assessments of Dr. Khälss’ knee joint problems. The second form, a bit yellow, is his discharge medical evaluation, dated to 1944. Another document (not in a sleeve), is a two-sided findings form, which gives a detailed medical history of Dr. Khälss’ knee problems, and a detailed assessment of the current status. The evaluation was conducted by doctors at the Reserve Lazarett Passau, in February of 1945, and advises against any additional operation for the right knee - though also classifies the ailment as “Chronic”.  Another, small onionskin document dated to 1944 notes that (it accompanies) an excerpt from an evaluation committee regarding to what degree Dr. Khälss might be fit for duty. All the documents are in very good condition. Interesting document group!
