D-122 Army Wehrpaß for Unteroffizier Alfred Paul
Straube, with Paper Cover – Killed During Anti-Partisan Fighting in Greece
Other than for a small hole through one page (34), this pass is in
excellent condition! Most unusual, is that it comes in a paper cover supplied by
the Wehrmeldeamt Naumberg (Saale), with a National Emblem (eagle), and an Iron
Cross with the notation “fallen for Führer, Folk and Fatherland” – this
tasteful presentation apparently used in lieu of the usual red penciled “X”
through the first page, etc. A look through the book shows some pretty
intriguing information! The Unit assignments indicate that Straube was an
Infantryman
until August of 1941 – but then transferred over to a Field Police Unit. From
that point on until his death in July of 1944, he was involved in “Bandenbekämpfung”
- Anti-Partisan operations (and all this entailed) in Greece. His promotions
from Gefreiter to Unteroffizier are certified by a “Field Police Kommissar”.
His promotion to Unteroffizier was authorized in Saloniki (Greece), and his
combat action entries (on page 32) note anti-partisan operations on the Aegean
and Ionian islands. The subsequent page (34) notes that he was killed on July
28, 1944 in “Florina” – but quite unique: a portion of this line entry is
thoroughly blacked out, apparently a censored item! Very neat! This entry is
also certified with the red ink “Feldpolizei-Komimissar and Unit Leader”
stamp. Oddly enough, there are no awards listed (no Anti-Partisan badge). Very
cool Wehrpass!!!
