D-143 Super Luftwaffe
Wehrpaß for Unteroffizier Cristoph Neubert (Aircraft Mechanic); Served Through
the Battle of Britain
The Wehrpass is in pretty good condition with the cover nice and
clean, no dog-earing and with the grey spine tape in nice shape other than for a
couple of small splits. The inner pages, however, while still connected to each
other by the staples, are separated from the cover itself. The book has a great
photo of a very eager looking young Christoph Neubert, whose civilian job in the
Soldbuch is noted as “Mechanic”. This skill he put to good use, volunteering
for the Luftwaffe and serving as an aircraft mechanic - eventually becoming a
“No.1 Warte” – lead mechanic for an aircraft. The pass has all the usual
standard information entries, including personal data, RAD service, induction
date, helmet and cap size, weapons on which he qualified, awards, and combat
duty assignments (Units) and actions / campaigns in which he participated. The
awards entries include the War Merit Cross Second Class with Swords and the
Eastern Front Medal. The campaign entries are really cool, showing his support
of missions flown in Poland, and especially those subsequent entries indicating
operational support for aircraft flying missions over the British Isles during
the “air battle over England) in 1940. He
was stationed in Holland at the time, and later, after a stint on the Russian
Front, continued on supporting aircraft in the so-called “Little Blitz”
campaign into 1944. It appears that in the last months of the war he was
re-assigned in Germany as an instructor – and that is where the war ended for
him. Neubert’s Units included KG 4 (KG= Kampfgeschwader = Bomber Squadron), KG
100 (Special Purpose Pathfinder Group), KG 1.Later, he shifted to fighter
squadrons (Jagdgeschwader) where he serviced fighter aircraft, first in JG 7 and
then, best of all, in JG 301 (in which Unit he would have serviced ME 109
G10’s). All of the handwritten entries are as sharp and clear as the day
they were written. A very cool document!
