D-176  Document, Photos and Identification Disk Grouping for a Navy Marine Artillery Officer Leutnant Dr. Karl Graak
Three very nice photographs – two of these the same size (7” by 4.5” or 177mm by 130mm) showing the same Officer from slightly different angles (taken during the same sitting) with the Officer wearing a field grey Marine Artillery blouse with the Army style collar Litzen (tabs), and very high quality smaller picture (just over 3.5” by 2.5” or 930mm by 660mm, it was cut down from a photo postcard) showing our Officer in a double breasted navy blue blouse with the blue cap (excellent paper).  There is also an excellent award document awarding “Leutnant M.A. (i.e. Marine-Artillerie) Dr. Karl Graak” the Iron Cross 2nd Class. The document is in the standard award document size (200mm by 140mm), with the commonly encountered two-hole punch along the left size (allowed the document to be stored in a binder). The document is in excellent condition, awarded at the Staff Quarters on 13 June 1941 with an original signature of Alfred Saalwächter, General Admiral and Oberbefehlshaber (Commander) of the Marinengruppenkommando (Navy Group Command) West, complete with a matching certification stamp. The Identification disk is a great example in dark grey zinc, with a sealer coat that has kept it mostly oxidation-free. The stamped name is very clear and precise, the letters filled in with black paint and extremely legible, reading “Dr. Karl Graak M.A. Offz. R. 1943”. The “R” on the disk seems to indicate that Graak was a Reserve Officer. The items come in an envelope hand-addressed to Graak, with the country noted as Germanie, and an abbreviation of the word “Signore” suggesting that the addresser was from Italy. A very neat set!
