D-178 Kriegsmarine
Soldbuch for U-Boot Obermaschinist Georg Böttger; Listed as MIA but Later
Researched as KIA
Very interesting book for a handsome young NCO named Böttger, who
looks extremely neat and trimmed in his photograph (wearing the blue uniform
jacket) – unfortunate that an entry notes him as MIA. Thanks to one of
my astute customers (thanks Ian), we now know he was lost in action while
serving onboard U-240, which was sunk on 17.05.44. This confirms
with what appears to be the signature of "Link" in the leave
pages. Oberleutnant zur See Günther Link was the CO of U-240. Böttger
served with the boat through trials and commissioning and going out on partol
which was normal for U-Boat crews joining a new boat ( http://uboat.net/boats/u240.htm
). The book overall is in very good condition, with hardly any real wear
to the cloth spine tape; there is only a snub to the lower right cover corner.
The interior is very clean other than for the very first page (which is often
soiled), with only some very minor dog-earing to the bottom right page corners.
At the top of the inside front cover is the notice in red ink, indicating Böttger
was listed as “vermisst” (MIA) as of 15 June 1944 (green arrow in the
picture points to the word “vermißt”). The active Unit data page shows his
last assignment was with the 5th U-Flottilla (page 33). His award entries list
the Spanish Cross in Bronze without Swords, The Minesweeper Badge, a 4-Year
Faithful (Long) Service award, the Memel Medal, and what appears to be a
Marksmanship award Second Class (this in 1935). The book has normal personal
info entries, a large number of clothing entries (common to Navy Soldbuchs), pay
entries and Tobacco rations, with two pages of leave entries.
