D-180 Group of Documents to Sergeant Witold
Adamski (Kavallerie Rgt. 10), One Signed By [Then] Brigadier General Olbricht
(Executed 21 July 1944 as Head of the Anti-Hitler Resistance)
This set of three documents, all for the same Army Sergeant, in
great condition, though one of the documents has been permanently affixed to a
rather poorly trimmed cardboard panel, perhaps from the back of a picture frame
or box of some sort, and the other has paper along the rear edges, also from a
previous attachment to something. The most significant document is a promotion
certificate from Waffenunteroffizier [Ordnance Sergeant] to Waffenwachtmeister
[Ordnance Technical Sergeant], dated to 1938, which is signed in ink by the
Chief of the General Army Office of the Army High Command (General Staff), later
Deputy Chief of the Home Army, Brigadier General Friedrich Olbricht. Promoted to
General in 1940, by 1944 Olbricht’s activities included being the military
head of the resistance movement and planning the “Valkyrie” operation
(assassination of Hitler) - for which he was arrested and executed in the Army
Headquarters courtyard shortly after midnight on the night of the failed attempt
(21 July 1944). This document is in very good condition other than for some
yellow staining to the bottom edge (perhaps from a spill, of some sort), and a
small peeled nick along the top left edge - neither of which would be much issue
with the document in a frame. Another hand-made certificate, signed by a 2nd
Lieutenant (leader of the staff of a Pionier Unit), is for a shooting award. The
last document is an award for a Four Year Faithful Service medal. At this time,
Adamski was serving with a Cavalry Regiment. A very nice grouping with an
original signature of the man who originated the Valkyrie operation!
Historically significant!
