D-183 Award Cassette and Outer Storage Case for a
Combined Pilot / Observer Badge with Diamonds
An amazing piece, and only 57 of these were ever awarded. The
rectangular outer storage case has an impressive raised relief Luftwaffe eagle
centered on the nice, simulated grained leather texture card cover. The case
measures about 14” by 10.5”, and is in very good condition with no damage to
any of the corners. The top of the cloth hinged storage case is secured to the
bottom by means of two small white bakelite sliding pegs, which slip through a
pair of loops on the lower side of the case. Both pegs are still present (and
almost look like ivory), and firmly attached by thongs to the cover portion. The
interior of the case (both top and bottom) are slightly stained (browned around
the edges), where the end panels meet the frame, but otherwise in fine
condition. The light brown (almost fawn colored) cassette is a handsome
piece, deeply embossed at the front center with a gilt horizontal-winged eagle
and swastika superimposed over a pair of Field Marshal’s batons (the latter
representing Göring), while the edges are embossed with an inset foil filigree,
also in gold. The cassette is in great condition, including the spine, which
shows hardly any sign of wear from opening and closing. The backside of the
cassette shows a few tiny spots, but is other wise great, and the interior,
though bare of the original award document, is otherwise sound. All in all a
really fine example of the cassette for this extremely rare award, with the nice
outer hard shell storage case included.
