D-186 Fantastic Grouping for Obergefreiter from
Tiger Tank Unit 505
This amazing grouping was an indirect owner acquisition and includes
the soldbuch, three awards with original documents, dog tag and photos of
Obergefreiter Alfred Scheffler, a member of 1./s. Panzer Abteilung 505. Also
included is a Unit reference book called “The Tiger Project, A Series Devoted
to Germany’s World War II Tiger Tank Crews”. This is book two for “Schwere
Panzer (Tiger) Abteilung 505”. Let’s start with the soldbuch, which is very
worn and mostly complete. It is missing pages 15, 16, 25 and the back cover.
Page 15 was for “security checks”, page 16 was “dental care” and page 25
was for “additional leave”, which would have been blank in this case as
pages 23 and 24 were for the same and entries ended. Looking through this
soldbuch, which is chock full of entries, you can see the Scheffler was born on
24.7.23 in Hamburg. He entered the service on 12.Okt.41 with the Rank of “Panzershutzen”,
eventually rising in the ranks to “Obergefreiter” of 1.9.44. He originally
volunteered into active duty at “W.M.A. Hamburg”, then was assigned to two
replacement Units. He finally entered field service as a member of the
“1.Marsch-Komp.Pz.Ers.-Abt. 5”, then was transferred to the 505th and
eventually the 508th Panzer Abteilung. His equipment and arms listings are
incredibly comprehensive; he was actually assigned four different 98k rifles! He
also spent a lot of time at hospitals, from both sickness and wounds. The most
severe of his wounds was suffered on 18.10.44 when he spent nearly two months
recovering from shrapnel wounds (31d=bomb wounds). He was allowed leave on five
different occasions, four of which he returned home to Hamburg. His soldbuch is
signed by several important Officers, including twice by KIA Knights Cross
holder Wilhelm (?) His three awards are listed as well! These include the Silver
Tank Badge, an EKII and of course the Black Wound Badge. All of the awards are
included as part of the grouping as are the original presentation documents.
Each was awarded while he was a member of the 505th. An interesting entry in the
soldbuch indicates that he suffered an initial shrapnel wound on 14.10.44 and
spent three days in the hospital. His EKII document was issued on 11.10.44 and
both his Panzer Assault Badge and Black Wound Badge were issued on 15.10.44.
They were right on top of things, even this late in the war! The Panzer Assault
badge was a private purchase, being produced by C.F. Zimmermann (stamped L/52),
with the wound badge being stamped “3” for Wilhelm Deumer and the EKII
stamped “122” for J.J. Stahl. His complete dog tag is a zinc example,
stamped very clearly with his original Unit, blood type and number each of which
matches the entries in his soldbuch. Also included are two photographs of
Scheffler, one taken in early 1944 as a Gefreiter in front of a Tiger Tank and
another, a studio photo taken after December of 1944 (it simply says “1944”
on the reverse) as he has all of his badges (and is an Obergefreiter) and must
have been out of the hospital to have the photograph taken. This is a fantastic
opportunity so don’t miss out!
