D-190 Wehrpass of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
Guard SS “Totenkopfverbande” Stabsscharfuhrer Paul Katterle
Born Paul Karl Walter Katterle on March 31, 1909 in Guben. His
Wehrpass was issued to him on March 8, 1938 from the Berlin VII Recruiting
District Central Office. Although Katterle served with differing Luftwaffe
Units, only his SS identification disc information appears on page one of his
Wehrpass. This reads “SS=T=Stuba Oranienburg 9 6. His
identification photograph is riveted into the book and unfortunately is dampness
and age damaged, however you can clearly see that Katterle was photographed in
civilian attire. On March 17, 1938, Katterly was accepted as a volunteer
for the Luftwaffe Flak and from there entered his general military service on
May 27, 1938 with the 10. Batterie Flak Regiment 12 in Berlin-Lankwitz.
His career entries also include 4. Batterie Reserve Flak Battalion 122, Staff
Batterie of Reserve Flak Battalion 12 and service with the SS “Totenkopf”
Infantry Reserve Rifle Company, and 2. Company SS “Totenkopf” Guard
Battalion Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Katterle was released from
military service on July 26, 1938 with the rank of Kanonier. His
qualification rating at the time of release was K4, and the reason for release
was his successful completion of the Flak Course and would then be placed in the
Reserve pool of men to be called up as required. He was trained in the use
and operation of Model 98 rifles, 2cm Flak Gun Model 30, “Inf. Gesch.” And
an unspecified model of machine pistol. His promotions include Gefreiter
in January of 1940, SS Rottenfuhrer of the Reserve in December 1940, SS
Unterscharfuhrer, and SS Oberscharfuhrer of the Reserve. Katterle was also
temporarily elevated to SS Stabsscharfuhrer status while at Sachsenhausen
Concentration Camp. Along with this Wehrpass, we will include 7 pages of
research/translations from the book, explaining and identifying Katterle’s
Wehrpass entries and service.
