E-101 RARE Cased Three-Quarter
Size Second Model Luftwaffe Dagger With Portepee by SMF
This RARE example is pictured on page 110 in the book
entitled World War II German War Booty, A Study in Photographs by LTC
Thomas Johnson. It is a superlative example that might be the only cased
example to have survived the war! The “light-blue” leather covered
case measures approximately 11 by 4.5 by 1 inches. The leather shows some
scuffmarks to the lid and the edges/corners, grading strong excellent!
There are two brass clips that lock the lid to the case bottom. The
underside of the box is lined in “black” thin leather that is commonly found
on most award cases, both big and small. The inside lid is finished in a
“royal-blue” satin while the recessed bottom is fitted with a
“bluish-purple” felt. Around the inside perimeter of the case bottom
is a “twisted white cord”. The inside shows some age soiling that I
believe will clean up very nicely! The dagger has been protected all these
many years and as a result, it is in mint condition! This piece measures
9.5" overall. The outstanding aluminum fittings are the “natural
bright color” throughout (Volume II, page 393, lower). They are in mint
condition reflecting outstanding detail and workmanship! The crossguard is
loose and the pommel is tightly fit into place. As a result, I’ve
decided not to try to tighten the hilt fittings and would recommend the new
owner do the same! This in NO way affects the collect ability of this
magnificent piece! The grip is a fine “light-orange” showing no signs
of wear/age. The grip is tightly wrapped with twisted aluminum wire.
Attached to the hilt is an original miniature knot in mint condition. Very
nice! The blade is bright and shiny grading mint. The obverse blade
is etched “Boecker & Kraft / Hagen-Halden”. The reverse ricasso is
etched with the “SMF seated King” trademark, and “D.R.G.M.” (Volume II,
page 393, upper). The blue leather washer is in place. The scabbard is the
“flat style” having beautiful detail with both bands and rings present.
It is finished in a beautiful and mint medium-grey finish showing no age signs.
A very beautiful and most impressive piece! A MUST for the serious
“dagger” or “miniature” collector! Dagger - Mint. Case –
Strong excellent.
