E-114 Government Official’s Dagger by Alcoso
This dagger was just purchased by one of my pickers! Quite a
looker here! The silver plated finish grades 100%! The patina is
nice and dark just the way you want these pieces to look! The hilt eagle
head exhibits minor carrying time to the edges and the pommel top, but ever so
slight! The decorative lines are beautifully cut, while still retaining a
nice matching burnish. The top spanner matches the look of the hilt
showing some signs of being turned, in addition to not being flush with the
eagles head. The grip plates are artificial mother of pearl having a
fairly dark golden appearance. They are enhanced by swirl grains to the
surfaces of the celluloid. The backstrap decorative lines follow the
bordering areas of the grip adding true elegance to the design. The grip
side plate plating has not held up well over the years. However, the vast
majority of Alcoso pieces that are in collections or on the market have the same
condition! The plates perfectly fit the hilt, pommel and ferrule.
The crossguard is one of the best-detailed Alcoso guards you’ll encounter.
It features a striking open-winged eagle with the head correctly turned toward
the viewer’s left. The details to the bird’s head, legs, talons,
wreath and swastika are exceptional. The edges remain crisp throughout,
while the surfaces are smooth. The blade is bright, having 100% graining.
The edges remain crisp while the tip is the needle-like variety. The
runner marks are very faint! There are a couple of minor smudges to both
sides, rendering a near mint rating! The reverse ricasso is etched with an
early Alcoso trademark indicating that the piece was probable produced around
1938 (Volume I, page 19, second from left). The trademark is the
perpendicular positioned scales style having the factory name block lettered in
an arch shape over the trademark. The scales have the firm’s initials (ACS)
interspersed. The blade washer is the thin, blue style exhibiting much
wear/age, grading excellent-. The CHOICE scabbard is totally straight!
The carrying bands feature highly detailed oak leaves and acorns with the
leafing flowing toward the eyelets on the obverse side, but away from the
eyelets on the reverse side. The pebbled surfaces are crisp. The
throat is retained by two, small-bore, flathead side screws that are unturned.
A VERY, VERY collectible example! Near mint.
