E-114a  Early Government Official’s Dagger by Carl Eickhorn
This is the FIRST Eickhorn Government Official Dagger that I’ve handled in past seven years!  I’ve had many Alcoso examples during this period, but NOT the Eickhorn model!  Most collectors will agree that the Eickhorn Government Officials Dagger has a much nicer look in addition to being finished better, especially to the eagle guard.  This example has been cleaned in recent years and is just now beginning to form a new patina.  The silver plating throughout grades 100%!  The pommel eagle head shows minor carrying time to the edges and the top.  The spanner nut is exactly flush with the pommel top surface.  It displays minor turning signs, but ever so slight.  The decorative cut-in lines, which follow the backstrap edges, are deep and precise.  The recess areas retain their original antique burnishing.  The twin ferrule lines are deep with all the background burnishing intact.  The grip plates are the artificial mother-of-pearl, having that lighter golden-hue appearance.  There are a couple of tiny needle tip sized chips to the obverse plate.  The crossguard has fine detail throughout, retaining the straight burnish line above the raised-out depiction.  The open-winged eagle is a beauty, grasping in his talons a large wreathed swastika.  The edges and surfaces exhibit very mild carrying/storage time.  The mirror finished blade is a GEM retaining 100% factory graining.  The edges and tip are crisp.  The in and out marks are faint at best!  The reverse ricasso is etched with the Eickhorn 1935-41 Squirrel logo with the burnished background grading and even 100%.  The small size thin leather washer is in position.  The scabbard has a couple of minor carrying taps to both edges.  The obverse and reverse pebbling is perfect.  The carrying bands have outstanding detail to the oak leaves and acorn mix and correctly point toward the eyelets.  The eyelets retain good crispness having triple serrated surfaces. The throat is the typical thicker Eickhorn style being retained by two, flush mounted, headless screws which is indicative of an early piece.  An early, original, textbook example!  Strong excellent.
