E-201  Imperial Triple Engraved Army Cavalry NCO Sword by Carl Eickhorn
This example was recently purchased via a small "Hotel" buy and remains in untouched condition! The large size hilt is of the nickel Dovehead design showing some wear/age. It is very similar to the one illustrated on Page 160 in the Johnson/Wittmann Imperial Weapons Book, with the exception that this piece was manufactured by the prestigious firm of Carl Eickhorn.” The nickel plating rates at least 80% with the majority of the wear appearing to the pommel, top backstrap, crossguard and the inside portion of the P-guard. The edges throughout the hilt display minor edge wear. The grip is beautiful sharkskin exhibiting minimal wear. It is tightly wrapped with triple twisted silver wire with the center strand being larger. The 33" triple engraved blade is bright and shiny having the wide fuller construction. The blade spine and tip remain crisp while the lower 17" of the edge exhibits edge sharpening.  The blade has 15" of exquisite engraving to both sides and the spine. The obverse blade contains “three panels with the center panel being engraved “Schafer” over “15 Prussian Reiter – Rgt” . The three inch panel to the right contains crossed cannons, drum, crossed lances, flags and floral while the panel to the left contains crossed flags and the Imperial eagle. The remaining area features a beautiful floral design. The reverse center panel measures 6" in length depicting a long line of charging lancers led by an officer carrying a sword. To the right is a 3" panel exhibiting a bugle, drum, flags, sword and floral. Finally, to the left is a 2.75" panel with crossed flags, a sword, Imperial eagle and floral. Had it not been for the edge sharpening the blade would have graded near mint, however, it rates strong excellent-. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the early Carl Eickhorn trademark comprising double oval circles. Lying between the circles is the company name and location Carl Eickhorn / Solingen. In the very center lies the Eickhorn Squirrel over the company initials “C.E.” The scabbard shell has two tiny hits to the lower obverse side in addition to having two side hits approximately 2" below the scabbard carrying ring band. The shell is the blued variety with the finish showing “thinning throughout. The shell was taped for two side screws; however, none were every mounted. The scabbard ring is the fixed variety. A collectible example for the Sword or Imperial collector! Near excellent.
