E-227 Early Personalized Army Officer’s Lionhead
Artillery Sword by E. & F. Horster
This early example was originally purchased directly from the Veteran
via a large “hotel” buy in the Seattle, Washington area! It is an
early, heavy brass example, having fine hand-engraving throughout!
Surprisingly, the fire gilding to the entire hilt is gorgeous, especially taking
into account that it is an early piece, grading 96%. The wear appears to
be mostly confined to the inside of the P-guard area. The Lionhead is
stunning with hand enhancing throughout. It is equipped with small beaded,
reddish eyes that have a piercing effect to the onlooker. Beautiful!
The P-guard is adorned with beautifully executed oak leaves while the backstrap
contains a floral pattern. The obverse crossguard langet houses two
crossed cannons with hand-enhancing throughout. The quillon ends in a
finely detailed Lionhead. The reverse langet is adorned with the original
owner’s initials, which are professionally done (E.W.). The black
celluloid grip is perfect! It is tightly wrapped with triple twisted
silver wire with the center strand being slightly larger and twisted in the
opposite direction. The bright nickel plated blade measures approximately
31” in overall length. The spine and tip are hit-free, while the blade
contains one small nick. The nickel plating easily grades 100%.
There are the normal in and out marks in addition to light, surface scratching,
which is common to Third Reich swords. Accordingly, the blade grades near
mint+! Very nice! The obverse ricasso is stamped with the
manufacture’s block lettered name and location E. & F. Horster / Solingen.
The leather washer is missing to time! The scabbard is a real looker and
is totally straight! The original, bright, factory black paint easily
grades 98%. There are the common paint spiders and mild surface scratches
appearing to the lower quarter of the scabbard. Sounds much worse then it
appears! A VERY NICE representative example! Hard to find original
Artillery swords! BUY in ANY condition! Strong excellent.
