E-227a Army Officer Dovehead Sword, Derfflinger
Model 1735 by Carl Eickhorn
This is the Derfflinger pattern Eickhorn Field Marshall series sword
that is much in demand by today’s collecting community. This is a direct
Veteran purchase! The hilt design is illustrated in the Angolia Sword
Book, page 82, upper. The hilt is solid brass having a heavy feel to the
hand. The gilding rates approximately 95% with most of the wear appearing
to the pommel and upper backstrap areas. This pattern sword has the very
appealing pearling designs throughout the hilt. In addition, it features a
series of raised dots which follow the border edges of the sword directly into
the knuckle bow which is the flat style. The langet portrays a
closed-winged Army eagle clutching a swastika. The quillon is curled with
the beading continuing throughout the design. The underside of the lower
hilt is stamped Ges. Gesch.. The black celluloid grip is in perfect
condition. It is tightly wrapped with triple twisted wire with the center
being larger. The blade is approximately 32” in overall length. It
is the nickel plated style remaining bright and shiny. Evidently the sword
must have been stored in the basement where some moister collected in the
scabbard resulting in minor rust to the inside of the scabbard and on the blade.
The rust to the blade is confined, for the most part, to the spine and the blade
edges, although there are a few smudging and rust spots to the face of the blade
itself. Sounds much worse then it is! Accordingly, the blades grades
very good! The reverse ricasso is stamped with the Eickhorn 1935-41
Squirrel proof with the company name and location beneath Eickhorn / Solingen.
The leather washer is in place. The scabbard is straight throughout with
the original bright black factory paint rating 98%. There are a few paint
spiders and two small areas of lifting. A VERY NICE display piece!
Excellent.
