E-229a RARE Early Art Deco Army Officer’s
Pantherhead Sword (Model 120) by Alcoso
The Alcoso Model 120 Sword is a VERY RARE pattern sword to encounter
in ANY market (Johnson Volume IV, page 176). It is considered by many to
be the MOST desirable design produced by this prestigious manufacturer. In
fact, Alcoso did feature this sword on the cover of it’s circa 1938 catalog.
In addition, it was utilized as the model for the famous Field Marshall v.
Blomberg Honor Sword (Johnson Volume VI, pages 207 to 216). The hilt is
the solid cast iron style which is the correct metal utilized on this model
sword. There is hand embellishment throughout! The gilding grades
100% while the factory lacquer grades 90%. By the way, the entire hilt has
the same greenish tinge appearance that we encounter on the Eickhorn Prinz Eugen
model swords. The Pantherhead has the usual weave design to the fur.
The cat is equipped with beautiful red faceted glass eyes. The sword
presents a unique design on the backstrap, ferrule and the “P” guard which
features large, raised-out, art deco oak leaves. The obverse langet
displays an open-winged Army eagle with the bird’s head facing to the left.
The eagle grasps a wreathed swastika in its talons. To accent the langet
there appears the same style art deco oak leaf flanking both areas between the
lower wings and wreath. The grip remains in mint condition, being black
celluloid over wood. It is tightly wrapped with triple twisted brass wire
with the center strand being larger and twisted in opposite direction. The
massive 34” blade is the nickel plated style, grading near mint. The
edge and spine are hit-free, while the tip has a very minor mark. The
reverse ricasso is stamped with the Alcoso trademark that was utilized between
the years 1937 to 1939. It features the firm’s name Alcoso block
lettered over the scales logo. The scales have the firm’s initials, ACS
interspersed. The thick brown leather washer is intact. The original
to the piece black scabbard is totally straight to all sides. The paint
grades 90% and appears to have had some touch-up. Additionally, there are
the common paint spiders throughout. If you are a SERIOUS sword collector,
DON’T pass this up! RARE Sword here! Strong excellent.
