E-230a SCARCE Early Army Dovehead Sword With Oak
Leaf Langet by Alcoso
This SCARCE example was recently purchased as part of a very large
sword collection. It is illustrated in the Angolia Sword Book, page 69,
and is an Unattributed pattern housing crossed laurel leaves on the obverse
langet. The hilt of this Dovehead example is fine quality brass, bearing
an outstanding gilded finish, grading 97%! The minor wear is confined to
the very top of the pommel and to the inside of the P-guard. It addition,
there is hand-enhancing throughout! Spectacular, especially taking into
account that it is an early example! The P-guard, backstrap and pommel are
adorned with raised out oak leaves. As previously cited, the obverse
langet is adorned with raised out crossed laurel leaves with outstanding
background accents. The langet ends in a beautifully detailed floral ball.
The black celluloid grip grades mint- and is wrapped with triple twisted silver
wire with the center stand being larger. The wire is slightly loose
probably the result of grip shrinkage. The nickel plated blade measures
approximately 30” in overall length. The spine edges and tip are factory
crisp while the blade edge has one small nick. The reverse ricasso is
etched with the Alcoso scales trademark having the company name arched in block
letters (Volume I, page 19, third from left). The firm’s initials ACS
are interspersed in the logo. Finally, directly below is the company
location Solingen. The blade easily grades mint-. The scabbard shell
is straight. The original factory black paint shows much wear/age, grading
50%. In addition, there is some rust throughout which can easily be
cleaned! A SCARCE pattern sword that is missing from most sword
collections! I was NOT able to locate another after searching 30 years of
sales catalogs! Full excellent.
