E-232a Army NCO Ordnance Sword With Finger Loop by
Carl Eickhorn
The hilt design is illustrated in the Angolia Sword Book, page 74,
lower, in addition to appearing in the original Eickhorn Kundendienst.
This example has the unembellished plain brass hilt. The hilt finish is
slightly tarnished, having been cleaned in recent years and is just now
beginning to take on a new patina. The entire hilt shows minor wear/age to
the surfaces and edges. The inside of the lower crossguard has the
original leather finger loop grading strong excellent. The underside of
the hilt is stamped with the Waffen-Amt marking and beneath is the
accountability number 6538. The opposite side of the hilt is stamped C.E./G.
The black celluloid grip is in very nice condition, exhibiting minor marks here
and there. It is tightly wrapped with double twisted brass wire that
contains brass cleaning residue in the recess areas. The 32-inch polished
steel blade is bright and shiny, grading near mint. The blade is the
variety with a wide fuller. The edge, spine and tip are crisp. The
reverse ricasso is stamped with the early Eickhorn trademark (Volume I, page 24,
left). It consists of double oval circles with the company name and
location housed between the circles Carl Eickhorn / Solingen. Finally, the
center circle contains the Eickhorn sitting Squirrel. The thick leather
washer is in place, grading excellent. The lower ricasso spine is stamped
with the number 2. The anodized scabbard is straight throughout, with the
finish grading 95%! There is light age peppering throughout both sides,
which does not take away from the appearance of the scabbard. The upper
obverse side, just below the throat, is matching stamped 6538. In
addition, the reverse side is stamped C.E./G with the G code being used in lieu
of the manufacture’s date. This style of marking was utilized to
disguise the amount of (edged) weapons being made during this early period.
The G represents (in code) the year 1935 and beneath is the Waffen-Amt stamp.
The thick scabbard throat is retained to the shell via one large side screw that
shows NO signs of turning. This is a beautiful NCO sword! No sword
collection should be without one! Excellent.
