E-233 Early Army Officer’s Lionhead Sword With Triple Engraved Blade
and Original Knot, Unattributed Model by WKC
This sword is a DIRECT Veteran purchase via a large “Hotel” buy! It is
REALLY beautiful having a most desirable triple-engraved blade! As
everyone is aware, engraved swords have been drying up on today’s market!
This sword is very similar to the one illustrated in the Angolia Sword Book,
page 146, upper. This model is a very early example having a solid brass
base with approximately 90% of the original gilding with some wear appearing on
the backstrap and pommel highlight areas. The cat’s eyes are large
faceted red colored stones. The entire hilt reflects fine hand-enhancing
throughout. The P-guard and backstrap are adorned with well-executed oak
leaves. The black celluloid grip is in perfect condition being tightly
wrapped with triple twisted brass wire with the center being larger. The
obverse languet is adorned with crossed swords, lances and acorns similar, but
not an exact match to the sword pictured in the Angolia Sword Book, page 146,
upper. Very nice! The quillion ends with a very finely detailed
lion’s head exhibiting little or no wear/age. The 30.5” blade is
bright and shiny, exhibiting an early quality nickel finish, grading near mint.
It displays the finest quality triple-etch pattern containing cross cannons,
swords, lances and standards near the ricasso while the center panels contains
crossed swords and laurel. The final obverse panel nearest to the tip has
floral depictions with military theme items such as standards, swords, helmets,
etc. In addition, the edge of the spine is deeply etched with laurel
leafing. The reverse side has three similar panels with the panel nearest
to the ricasso containing cross cannons, swords, lances and standards, while the
center panel houses crossed lances, a helmet, axes and laurel. Finally,
the panel nearest to the tip displays a lance, helmet, standard, shield and
laurel. Gorgeous workmanship! The obverse ricasso is stamped with
the WKC Knighthead trademark and directly below are the company initials WKC.
The brown leather washer is intact. The scabbard is a true WKC scabbard
with a large carrying ring having bright paint grading 90%, but thinning.
There are numerous paint spiders to the obverse and reverse sides. The
shell remains totally straight throughout! A very nice addition to any
sword or dagger collection! Excellent.
