E-233a Early Army Officer’s Pantherhead Sword,
Model # 119 by Alcoso
This Pantherhead sword is a quality all-brass construction. The
hilt design is illustrated in the Angolia Sword Book, page 64, upper right.
The gilding to the entire hilt rates approximately 50% with the remaining areas
displaying much age toning. The cat’s head is fitted with faceted red
glass eyes. The detail to the cat’s head and mane reflects quality hand
enhancing. The backstrap features raised-out oak leaving. The
obverse langet features an open-winged Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed
swastika with the eagles head facing to the right, which is in the opposite
direction from the majority of Third Reich swords. The details to the bird
are exceptional! The eagle has a good vaulted look and plenty of detail.
The quillon ends is a floral ball. The reverse langet houses an unadorned
cameo surrounded by hand chiseled oak leaves and acorns with much hand
enhancing. The black celluloid grip exhibits a couple of areas exhibiting
faint wear, which does not detract from the overall condition of the grip.
It is tightly wrapped with triple twisted brass wire with the center being
larger and twisted in the opposite direction from the outer two strands.
The 32.5” blade is the standard nickel plated variety, remaining bright and
shiny. The blade edge, spine and tip are crisp. The in and out marks
are very light, indicating that this piece did not see much usage! The
obverse and reverse sides exhibit faint smudging throughout, rendering a strong
excellent grading. The reverse ricasso is etched with one of the early
Alcoso scales trademark (Volume I, page 23, second from left). It features
the block lettered firm name in an arch over the ACS interspersed scales.
The brown leather washer is present. The scabbard is straight throughout
with 98% of the original shinny black paint intact. Very nice! There
are a few areas of paint spiders and faint surface scratches to both sides.
This is a very difficult Model Sword to locate in ANY market. Excellent.
