E-238a RARE Rococo Dovehead
Army Officer’s Sword, Model 1019 by Richard Abr. Herder
This RARE sword is out of my personal collection and is much
RARER then the Herder Lionhead version, Model 1017, that is illustrated in the
Angolia Sword Book, page 85. The hilt is identical to the Lionhead
counterpart, with the exception that this example is a “Dovehead”
model. It is NOT the commonly found lightweight aluminum variety, but
instead has an early heavy brass base with outstanding detail throughout the
hilt! Beautiful! It is adorned with “twirls, curls & swirls”
that leaves the onlooker in a state of awe! The entire hilt has a “golden-hue”
appearance that is really very striking while exhibiting little or no wear/age!
The crossguard features a large “closed winged eagle” with outstanding
detail. The black celluloid grip is perfect showing NO wear /age being
tightly wrapped with two strands of twisted brass wire. The blade is
33" in overall length and retains its bright appearance, as it is nickel
plated. There are NO nicks to any edges or the tip. There are the
common light superficial scratches that we encounter on Third Reich Sword blades
in addition to very light smudging throughout both sides. Accordingly, the
blade grades excellent! The reverse ricasso is stamped with the “Herder”
trademark. The letters of the firm’s name “Rich. A. Herder / Solingen”
form “back-to-back top arches” while the company location forms the arch
base “Solingen”. The “diamond” logo forms the center of the
trademark. The original leather washer is present. The scabbard
shell is straight throughout with the original black paint remaining bright and
shiny. It grades 90% with MUCH age spidering to both sides. Good
looking! A VERY RARE sword that is a MUST for the serious sword
collector! I’ve only seen two swords of this type, to include mine,
during my 40+ years of collecting! Strong excellent.
