E-260  ULTRA RARE 2nd Model Luftwaffe General’s Sword by Carl Eickhorn
No matter how long you’ve been in this hobby or how many 2nd Model Luftwaffe General’s swords you see or own, each one leaves you truly in AWE by the elegant design and the hand workmanship!  This is the Model Nr. 1732 sword which is illustrated in the 1938 version of the Carl Eickhorn Kundendienst.  The hilt is cast of solid brass retaining 100% of the original fire-gilding exhibiting absolutely NO wear/age!  Upon closer examination there is extensive hand-enhancing throughout the entire hilt.  The pommel has a flared cap that serves to retain the blade tang to the hilt and is adorned with a raised relief floral design (Volume II, page 350).  The six ribbed grip is a gorgeous light orange color and appears to be RARE amber.   It is tightly wrapped with twisted, gilded brass wire with 100% of the gilding present.  The “D” guard contains a raised floral design having diamond shapes with small hand cut dots lying between the floral designs.  The hand enhanced designs are accented by bright and muted gold accents rendering a sparkle appearance throughout!  The end of the “D” guard forms a straight bar shaped crossguard that is adorned with a floral design ending in a rounded quillon end.  The obverse and reverse clamshells are spring loaded with the larger obverse guard featuring an applied silver Luftwaffe eagle clutching a swastika.  The original frosting grades at 40% with the remaining areas having a tarnished appearance.  The lower boarder of the shell is formed by a floral design with random surface pebbling that also exhibits a sparkling appearance!  Without question, the hilt grades mint!  An eye-popper here!  The magnificent nickel plated blade measures approximately 29.5”inches in overall length.  The edges and trip is factory crisp!  The blade is triple engraved, containing arabesque designs with 100% frosted background.  The obverse blade has a centered blued panel with raised, gilded lettering “In dankbarer Anerkennung” meaning “In thankful recognition”.  In addition, the reverse panel has the same arabesque design with a blued larger center panel having the same raised gilded letters Der Oberbefehlshaberder Luftwaffe – Hermann Goring which translates The Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe – Hermann Goring.   Finally, immediately after is Goring’s signature.  However, I’m sorry to report that the bluing to both sides has NOT fared well over the years with the obverse side grading 10% and the reverse grades 15%.  In addition, the letter gilding to both sides grades 80%!  There are deep smudges to both panels.  Accordingly, the blade grades very good+ to excellent-!  The reverse ricasso is etched with the Eickhorn 1935-41 Squirrel logo with the company location below Solingen.  The correct white felt washer is missing and in its place is a thicker leather washer.  The black leather scabbard shell is a fine one indeed!  It is decorated with dual lines running the length of both sides exhibiting NO cuts, scrapes or tears.  The only detractor is a faint horizontal crease to the upper obverse side.  The upper and lower fittings are gilded brass having a matching look to the hilt.  They are retained to the leather shell via two small staples.  Beneath the staples is the number 14.  The obverse mounting lug is slightly bent!  All in all a GORGEOUS example!  Excellent.
