E-270  SS NCO Sword by Pet. Dan. Krebs
This piece just surfaced via a small “hotel” buy along with two other SS Swords!  What a hit!  It is a NICE virgin piece showing much age!  The hilt remains in as found condition having a very dull appearance.  The hilt plating shows extensive wear/age and peppering throughout.  The plating grades 80%!  The “D” guard is beautifully formed, exhibiting crisp edges and smooth surfaces.  The left underside portion of the guard is NOT SS Kulturzeichen proofed (Volume IV, page 398).  The upper portion of the pommel cap has the raised-out SS sigrunne with the black backgrounding remaining at 90% with much age soiling (Volume IV, page 397).  The cap edges exhibit minor edge wear probably resulting from storage.  The lower quillon teardrop is the style with NO decorative drilling (Volume IV, page 618).  The lower ferrule features alternating standing leaves and acorns having a very dark appearance.  The grip is the ebony style having thirteen ribbed sections (Volume IV, page 401, middle).  The entire grip shows extensive wear to the black finish, grading 60%!  The 33” blade has the standard matte finish with the blade edge having one small nick, while the spine and tip are crisp!  There is minor smudging throughout rendering an excellent rating.  The reverse ricasso is etched with the Krebs second style trademark (Volume IV, page 383, right).  It depicts a lobster within a shield and around the top and sides is the company name and location “Pet.Dan.Krebs.Solingen”.  The original white leather washer is missing!  The scabbard is totally straight throughout!  The original black paint remains bright and shinny grading at least 97%!  Nice paint here!  The upper scabbard fitting has roughly 40% original black burnishing in the basket weave.  The plating to the reverse side of the fitting shows pimpling, grading 90%.  It is retained with two domehead obverse and reverse mounted screws showing NO signs of being turned.  The scabbard throat is the style with the SS Kulturzeichen proof appearing on the right side of the blade slot (Volume IV, page 358, narrative).  A NICE original piece!  Very good.
