E-391 Army Officer’s Dagger With Portepee and Hangers by WKC
This quality example is right out of the woodwork and is complete with the
hangers and portepee, which is mounted in the correct Army tie! The entire
dagger has that right out of the footlocker look. The silver plating has a
dark tarnished appearance, in addition to having approximately 20% original
factory lacquer remaining. The pommel is the 12-leaf style Type B showing
minor carrying-time to the edges and surfaces (Volume I, page 114, Type B).
The oak leaves exhibit outstanding detail and workmanship! The dark orange
grip is a real beauty being the Type C-gp having the thinner segments (Volume I,
page 12, right). It exhibits a couple of faint highlight marks, but NO
chips or cracks. Mounted to the hilt is the original 43cms portepee in the
correct Army tie. It shows light wear, grading strong excellent. The
ferrule has a matching appearance to the remaining dagger parts being theseven-leaf
variation (Volume I, page 117, second from the left). The matching
crossguard has crisp edges and smooth surfaces. It is the 2nd style WKC
crossguard utilized by this prestigious firm having the tomahawk or
hatchet-style beak design (Volume I, page 66). The blade is a real
show-stopper being mirror bright with 100% graining. There are NO hits to
the edges or the blade tip. It does have light in and out marks, grading
mint-! Stunning! The reverse ricasso is etched with the logo of this
renowned company, a knighthead with the firm’s initials below WKC and the
company location below that, Solingen (Volume I, page 64). The large size
dark brown leather washer is intact. The second style scabbard is straight
throughout displaying NO wear! The details to the pebbling and the
carrying rings are outstanding! The thicker scabbard throat is retained by
a single flathead side screw installed at the right side exhibiting mild turning
signs (Volume I, page 63, left). Accompanying this beautiful piece is an
original set of Army Hangers being the late style. The metal fittings have
a deep tarnished appearance. This is the deluxe type having the oak leaf
closed box clip with the top stamped DRGM (Volume I, page 218, left). The
straps are retained to the box clip by the folded over and sewn style of
mounting. The brocade shows minor wear/age to the highlights in addition
to minor fraying and small pulls. The backs are NOT velvet backed which is
an indication that this is a late-period piece. There is minor fraying to
the reverse sides. The oval buckles and slides are the oak leaf variety
with some darkening to the finish. The lower snaps are the deluxe push-up
style with the reverse side marked D.R.G.M. This set measures
approximately 10.75” in overall length. A NICE grouping! Dagger
– Strong excellent; Hangers – Very good.
