E-393a Army Officer’s Dagger With Portepee
Recent purchased directly from the original Veteran’s family, this
has never been in a collection! The fittings throughout have NOT been
cleaned since the war and reflect a very attractive matching patina. The
pommel is the 12-leaf style Type A which was predominantly utilized by the
firm’s of Eickhorn, Spitzer, Tiger and Puma (Volume I, page 114). I
believe this to be a Tiger manufactured piece. The silver plating to the
pommel rates 100%, while showing minor wear to the edge and pommel top.
The detail to the standing oak leaves is gorgeous! The grip is the plaster
filled variety having an off-white color (Volume I, page 8, right). It is
a type C-gp grip with the thinner segments (Volume I, page 12).
Remarkably, it remains in VERY collectible condition, displaying a few surfaces
marks in addition to a tiny chip to the upper obverse side. The ferrule is
the standard style having seven joining leaves exhibiting outstanding definition
to the leaves, in addition to having a matching silver plating and patina.
The crossguard eagle is the Generic A style, showing outstanding detail to the
eagle’s head, chest and wing feathers (Volume I, page 79, upper). For
your information, this is the most widely used Generic crossguard which was
utilized by a large number of manufactures (Volume I, page 78). The edges
are crisp, in addition to having smooth surfaces. Nice guard! The
hilt is complete with an Army 43cms portepee in the correct tie. The
entire portepee exhibits minor wear/age, grading strong excellent+. The
unmarked blade is a quality example remaining bright and shiny. There are
some light smudges to both sides in addition to faint scratches and the common
in and out marks. The edges remain crisp while the tip shows a minor hit.
Accordingly, the blade grades very good! A pigskin leather washer remains,
grading near mint. The scabbard perfectly matches the look of the hilt
fittings. The silver plating grades 100%! There is a major hit to
the left side directly between the two carrying bands. The bands are
highly detailed reflecting lots of hand engraving. The throat is retained
by two domehead side screws with the left head showing period turning signs.
In addition, there is a small split to the scabbard running from the left screw
to the scabbard throat. A DECENT, representative example! Excellent.
