E-394  Army Officer’s Dagger with Portepee by Carl Eickhorn (SCARCE Small 35-41 Trademark)
This is a DIRECT Veteran purchase!  It is in untouched condition having a beautiful aged patina.  The pommel is the 12-leaf style Type A exhibiting minor carrying wear to the top and the edge (Volume I, page 114).  In addition, there are minor areas of original lacquer to the top and in and around the standing oak leaves.  The dark orange grip is a Type C-gp with the thinner segments displaying NO wear or age.  There is the typical age soiling to the recess areas that will clean up nicely (Volume I, page 12).  The crossguard has crisp edges and smooth surfaces exhibiting outstanding detail to the eagle (Volume I, page 25).  It has the previously cited Eickhorn second style crossguard utilized by this famous firm (Volume I, page 26, right).  However, since the release of Tom’s first outstanding reference book entitled Exploring the Dress Daggers of the German Army, it has been discovered that Eickhorn really produced four crossguard types.  This will be addressed in Tom’s Second Edition printing.  Accordingly, this is now the fourth and last style crossguard utilized by Eickhorn.  Attached to the hilt is an original 43cms portepee in the correct Army tie, grading excellent-!  The blade is SPECTACULAR remaining mirror bright with 100% crossgraining.  The edges and tip are crisp with the tip being the needle point style!  The in and out runner marks are almost non-existent!  The blade grades mint!  The reverse ricasso is stamped with the very desirable Eickhorn small 1935-41 Squirrel trademark with the company location below Solingen (Volume I, page 27, lower left).  This stamped trademark was utilized in 1940.  The smaller size leather washer is present, grading near mint.  The second style scabbard shows some carrying time having two vertical hits to the obverse side while the reverse is straight (Volume I, page 26, right).   The dark patina perfectly matches the look of the hilt.  The thick scabbard throat is retained by a center-placed flathead screw on the reverse, which is unturned.  Typical of many Eickhorn Army scabbards this scabbard weight is loose!  A FINE example original example with the SCARCE logo!  Strong excellent.
