E-396a RARE Army Officer’s Dagger With Ivory
Grip and Double Engraved Blade by Emil Voos
Needless to say, this model Army dagger has all but disappeared from
today’s market! I strongly recommend purchasing any of these daggers NO
matter what the condition! The silver plating to entire dagger grades 99%
with the minor wear appearing to the top of the scabbard throat. The
dagger has been cleaned at one time, but again is showing signs of developing a
new patina. The pommel is the 12-leaf style Type A having outstanding
detail to the standing oak leaves (Volume I, page 114, type A). The top
and edge exhibits minor carrying/storage time. The grip is the most
desirable and elusive ivory style having an oval shape. Typical of ivory
grips this example exhibits nice age toning and a beautiful grain throughout.
In addition, there are the common age cracks and some chipping to the edges.
The crossguard is the Generic Type A having crisp edges and smooth surfaces
(Volume I, page 78). The details to the eagle’s head, wings and chest
are outstanding! The double engraved blade remains bright and shiny with
the edges containing a couple of minute nicks in addition to the tip showing a
slight bend (Volume I, page 132 to 135). Finally, there are some scratches
to the lower obverse and reverse tip area that were done in an attempt to remove
the faint surfaces smudges. The obverse side features an open-winged, art
deco eagle clutching a wreathed swastika with a plain surfaced ring around the
swastika flanked by a three-leafed oak branch sprigs under each wing. The
Army style eagle has the correct forty five degree angle and straight lined wing
tips (Volume I, page 132). The reverse side is adorned with beautiful
floral scenes. There are NO dribbles near the end of the engraving (Volume
I, page 135, right). In addition, the etching begins with the double-line
separating the etching from the ricasso (Volume I, page 134). The
background frosting is stunning, grading mint- showing some minor in and out
wear. The blade grades excellent! The reverse ricasso is etched with
the familiar trademark of this prestigious firm. It consists of a single
oval circle and inside the perimeter is the name of the company and its location
Emil Voos / Solingen. In addition, directly centered is the tree stump
with the snake wrapped around its girth (Volume I, page 133). The thick
size leather washer is present. The scabbard is straight throughout having
a gorgeous appearance! It is a Generic style with the thinner scabbard
throat being retained by a reverse, centered-positioned headless and flush
mounted screw that appears to be turned (Volume I, page 120). A textbook
example and one that is missing from most collections! Don’t pass this
up! Excellent.
