E-397  Army Officer’s Dagger by Richard Abr. Herder (SCARCE Maker)
A Richard Herder Army dagger is a SCARCE find!  This example is classic Herder wartime production, having a beautiful nickel finish throughout, grading 100% (Volume I, page 31).  The base metal to all parts is pot metal.  The pommel is the 14-leaf variety, style C, having outstanding definition to the standing oak leaves (Volume I, page 114, C).  An inside look shows the threaded separate stem in the center inner pommel area.  The pommel edges exhibit minor storage wear.  The grip is the type C-gp, having the thinner segments displaying NO wear or age, grading mint- (Volume I, page 12, right).  The grip has an outstanding, even canary-yellow color that truly takes your breath away!  The ferrule has a matching nickel plated finish, displaying the seven joining oak leaves (Volume I, page 117, second from right).  The crossguard is very similar to the Generic-B style; however, the Herder guard does not contain the slight dip at the meeting point of the brow and beak area (Volume I, page 99 and 100).  The guard edges remain crisp while the surfaces are smooth.  The blade remains bright/shiny, being the late style having the pre-shaped form (Volume I, page 16).  The edges appear to have been slightly sharpened while the tip is original to the piece.  The crossgraining remains at nearly 100%, while showing the normal runner marks.  The reverse ricasso is etched with the later Herder trademark appearing in a downward arch while the company location is applied in an upward arch, Solingen.  Centered between the company name and location is the Herder diamond (Volume I, page 31).  The large leather washer is present, grading excellent.  SCARCE maker mark here!  The blade grades excellent.  The scabbard shell displays numerous light taps to both side edges.  It is the Generic variety having the thin throat, with a reverse, center-positioned, headless, flush mounted screw (Volume I, page 120).  The entire nickel finish grades 100%.  The scabbard pebble pattern is crisp.  The oak leave bands display outstanding definition.  A MUST for an Army type collector!  A SCARCE maker made even more desirable by having a SCARCE Herder logo!  Strong excellent.
