E-399a SCARCE Double Engraved Army Officer’s
Dagger by Unknown Maker (Voos)
This example is quipped with CHOICE early silver fittings, having a
most desirable bluish-black patina. The patina has that great looking
sheen in the surface. The silver plating to the hilt and scabbard grades
100%! The pommel is the 12-leaf style Type A exhibiting outstanding detail
and workmanship throughout (Volume I, page 114, type A). The edge is
semi-crisp exhibiting mild storage wear, while the very top displays a few minor
storage taps. The impressive grip has a beautiful canary yellow color
exhibiting a couple of faint highlight marks resulting from storage. It is
the type C-gp having the thinner segments, grading near mint (Volume I, page 12,
right). The crossguard is the Generic A type which is the style normally
encountered with these no maker double engraved daggers (Volume I, page 78).
The eagle details are crisp while the remaining crossguard surfaces are smooth.
Attached to the hilt is an original to the piece 43cms portepee in the correct
Army tie. Upon closer examination, this portepee has been on this dagger
for a long time and renders a lighter patina to the covered ferrule. It
shows very mild wear to the cord highlights. The double engraved blade
remains mirror bright. The background frosting is absolutely stunning!
The right edge is crisp while the left edge has one minor nick. Very
slight! The tip on the other hand has a slight bend. The blade is
the correct style having NO maker in addition to featuring the dribble etching.
The etching begins on each side of the blade nearest the tang with a set of
double lines separating the etching from the ricasso (Volume I, page 134,
right). The obverse side features an open-winged, art deco eagle clutching
a wreathed swastika with a plain surfaced ring around the swastika flanked by
three-leafed oak branch sprigs under each wing. The Army style eagle has
the correct forty five degree angle and straight lined wing tips (Volume I, page
132). The reverse side is adorned with beautiful floral scenes. The
reverse ricasso area does not contain any maker’s mark. The blade grades
strong excellent+ to near mint-. The scabbard is totally straight
throughout, grading mint. None finer here! It has a matching patina
to the hilt. It is definitely the Generic type having highly detailed
bands that reflect hand workmanship to the veining. However, this example
has a thicker scabbard throat that still retains 100% of the original factory
lacquer. In addition, the throat is retained by a reverse,
centered-positioned flathead screw that is unturned (Volume I, page 120).
A GORGEOUS example! Near Mint-.
