E-411 Untouched Transitional/Mid Period First
Model Luftwaffe Dagger by Unknown Maker
This is yet another recent right out of the woodwork example!
As is the case with a previous listed 1st Model Luftwaffe piece that I recently
purchased, I’ve decided to leave this example in untouched condition for the
purist collector! I believe this to be a transitional/mid-period dagger
due to the lightweight aluminum chain and the thick crossguard throat (Volume
II, page 68). The silver finish to the pommel, crossguard and scabbard
fittings are perfectly matched exhibiting a thick coated patina. The
plating appears to grade 100%! The sunwheel swastikas are the medallion
insert variety with 100% silvering between the swastika legs in addition to
having 100% of the brass intact (Volume II, page 49, upper). The pommel
and crossguard edges remain crisp, while the surfaces are smooth. The dark
blue Moroccan leather displays highlight wear in the form of scuffs and scrapes.
It is tightly wrapped with springy, twisted aluminum wire which again is an
indication of a transitional piece. The unmarked, nickel plated blade
retains a very nice luster in addition to having crisp edges and tip.
There are some speckles to both sides in addition to faint surface scratches.
The dark blue Moroccan leather washer is intact displaying some wear/age,
grading excellent. The scabbard shell itself remains perfectly straight on
all sides. The original dark blue Moroccan leather matches the look of the
grip while still retaining very nice graining. There is missing leather to
the left side and the upper reverse side, in addition to having age cracks
throughout. The three fittings exhibit little to no wear/age. They
are retained with five headless flush-mounted screws which display mild period
turning signs. The chain is the transitional aluminum style; however, it
is badly twisted and misshaped. It has seven ringlets to the top and nine
ringlets at the bottom. The snap clip is aluminum with the clip also being
misshaped and partially sprung. A nice piece for someone on a budget!
Very good.
