E-424a Second Model Luftwaffe Dagger With Double
Engraved Blade and Portepee by Unknown Maker
This example surfaced via a “hotel” buy! It’s NO secret,
DIRECT Veteran pieces are getting harder and harder to find! Enjoy!
As everyone is aware, the Voos Company did not produce their own parts, but
opted instead to purchase them from other manufacturers and finish them
in-house. The pommel is the Generic style with the acorns facing in the
upward position (Volume II, page 142, left). The pommel exhibits mild
carrying wear to the top knob, raised sides and highlight areas. In
addition, there are remnants of the gilded wash to the reverse swastika.
Typical of most examples, the pommel suffers from the spin around condition due
to the shortness of the threading (Volume II, page 232, narrative). The
grip is the plaster filled style, having an off-white color that is tightly
wrapped with twisted silver wire. There is mild highlight wear throughout!
The crossguard is also the generic cast leaf type portraying the right-over-left
leaf configuration (Volume II, page 149, left). The edges and smooth
surfaces exhibit very minimal wear/age. Mounted to the lower grip is an
original 23cms portepee in the correct Luftwaffe tie. The cord, stem and
slide all display wear/age, grading excellent-. The double engraved blade
remains bright/shiny in addition to retaining crisp edges and tip. Unlike
many double engraved blades, the nickel plating grades 100%! The
background frosting can’t be upgraded, rating full mint. The motif is
vines and floral throughout both sides with the obverse side having the raised
out Luftwaffe eagle flying to the right while clutching a well-defined swastika.
Beneath each wing is a sprig of laurel leaves (Volume II, page 235, center).
It is the style with the extra droplets just below the tapered area near the
blade tip (Volume II, page 233, right). In addition, it has the single
border line adjacent to the etching (Volume II, page 232, bottom). The
ricasso areas are void of any maker’s mark. The blade easily grades near
mint! The original thin, blue, leather washer is present. The
scabbard is the generic variety having a beautiful silver plating, grading 100%
(Volume II, page 178, left). The shell is totally straight to all sides.
The thin throat is retained by two recessed side screws that display period
turning signs. The throat has the standard six-sided opening (Volume II,
page 181, top). A magnificent dagger that has all but disappeared from
today’s market! Strong excellent to near mint-.
