E-430b SA Ground Roehm Dagger With SCARCE Three-Piece Hanger by Gebr.
Heller (Small Anchor Logo)
This early Ground Roehm SA Dagger is a very collectible example! The solid
nickel crossguards have crisp edges, smooth surfaces and precise accent grooves.
Both guards are NOT internally marked with a caster’s mark, which is NOT
unusual for this maker. The guards appear to have been cleaned at some
time in the recent past. The reverse lower guard is Gau-stamped “Mi”.
The grip is the hardwood variety, having a mahogany color with an outstanding
vertical grain and a slimmer shape. The contour ridge is fairly sharp,
grading near mint. The upper obverse side contains a faint hairline crack.
NO worries! The grip-to-guard fit could not be better. The SA runes
button is beautifully set, displaying a few surface chips which are all too
common on early SA daggers. The SA eagle is the upward pointing beak style
that is expertly positioned on the grip. It displays nice age toning,
while exhibiting minor age soiling to the recess areas. The obverse blade
is a fine example retaining a bright appearance. The SA motto, “Alles
fur Deutschland”, is precise with 95% black backgrounding, which is the
hallmark of early Heller SA Daggers. Outstanding look here! There
are a few areas exhibiting faint background pebbling, which also is a common
find on all early Heller SA Daggers. The edges and tip remain crisp.
The obverse side crossgraining grades nearly 100% while the runner marks are
faint. The reverse side has had the entire Roehm inscription
professionally removed, but NOT re-grained or re-polished. The inscription
removal has also removed approximately 20% of the upper portion of the maker’s
logo. The reverse ricasso area is etched with the small Heller logo that
was used by the Heller firm on their Roehm inscribed daggers. It consists
of small double circles which traps the company name and location, Gebruder
Heller / Schmalkalden. The center of the circle features a small black
unimpeded anchor. The blade grades strong excellent! The scabbard
shell has a crease to the lower obverse side while the reverse has a carrying
dimple. The anodizing shows wear/age, grading 70%, while the original
factory lacquer is completely gone to time. The scabbard mounts perfectly
match the look of the hilt. The upper fitting displays minimal wear, while
the lower shows carrying signs throughout. The four domehead side screws
are intact and exhibit minor period turning marks. Mounted to the scabbard
ring is an original SA three-piece hanger with early solid nickel hardware.
The leather is correctly unmarked, showing wear/age. The short hanger
retaining loop is missing. A VERY desirable dagger! Excellent.
