E-431c Early SA Ground Roehm Dagger With Unique
Hanger (Damaged) by Wilhelm Kober & Co., Suhl (SCARCE Maker)
This example is a direct Veteran’s purchase via a large “hotel”
buy! The nickel crossguards are truly in very collectible condition, while
still retaining a beautiful patina. The upper guard is internally marked
with the letter “k” in a circle on one side of the tang clearance hole,
while the other side is marked with the number 6 or possibly the number 9.
The lower guard is marked with a large K on one side and a smaller case k in a
circle on the other side. The guard edges are crisp having smooth surfaces
with both guards showing a matching patina. Beneath the patina you can see
mild carrying/storage marks. The lower guard is reverse Gau-stamped
“He”. The grip is a very nice example having a medium contour ridge
with an attractive vertical grain. There is very mild wear throughout with
NO cracks or chips. The SA runes button is beautifully set, grading mint.
The matching solid nickel grip eagle is the point behind the head style,
exhibiting minor highlight wear. Beautiful hilt here! The obverse
blade is a bright example, exhibiting faint smudging in addition to the normal
runner marks. The obverse crossgraining grades nearly 100%, while the
edges and tip are crisp. The SA motto “Alles fur Deutschland” is
precise, with nearly 100% of the background burnishing intact. The reverse
side has had almost the entire original Roehm inscription removed, with the
exception a few areas that still exhibit very faint inscription signs here and
there. Approximately 93% of the reverse surface has been crudely
re-grained. The reverse ricasso is matching etched with double circles and
between the circles appears the company name and location, Wilh. Kober & Co.
/ Suhl. Inside is a centaur man/beast positioned over the Kober Company
formation date 1874. However, the top portion of the logo contains mild
grinding marks which have impacted the company name Kober. The obverse and
reverse sides of the shell have sustained a couple of hard dimples especially to
the reverse side. The obverse side, and to a much lesser degree the
reverse side, displays light rust which is all too common on these early
examples. The anodizing grades 60% with thinning throughout, while the
lacquer grades 30%. The early scabbard fittings are solid nickel with the
lower fitting exhibiting carrying dings, scratches and a couple of light
dimples. Finally, the ball has sustained a hard hit which again is a
common find on early pieces. The upper fitting is wrapped with an unusual
original brown leather hanger that is attached around the upper scabbard fitting
after the carrying ring had been removed. Period done! The scabbard
screws are solid nickel being the domehead variety with all four showing mild
turning signs. A NICE Roehm dagger! Excellent.
