E-435  Early SA Dagger With Hanger by Gebruder Heller
This CHOICE example does not look to have been cleaned since the war and was recently purchased at a large New England “hotel” buy.  The solid nickel fittings are matching throughout!  The guards are crisp having fine smooth surfaces beneath the medium patina.  The accent grooves are crisp and precise.  The lower reverse guard is period stamped with the Gau-stamp Th.  Internally, both guards are marked with the caster’s mark ‘S’ and ‘M’.  The tang is heavily encrusted with oxidation and is marked with the letter ‘E’.  The grip is the beautiful hardwood variety having a dark mahogany color with an attractive vertical grain.  The contour ridge is the high variety.  The obverse side displays what I believe are storage bruises in and around the eagle and the lower obverse guard areas.  The grip-to-guard fit is outstanding!  The SA button is nicely set, exhibiting mild wear to the enamel in addition to having some chipping.  The high necked nickel eagle is perfectly mounted to the grip showing faint wear to the highlights.  The FINE blade is a bright and shiny example!  The crossgraining grades 100% with 85% dark blackening to the backgrounding of the SA motto “Alles fur Deutschland”.  Thankfully, the edges and tip remain crisp.  There are a few minor smudges to the obverse and reverse sides rendering a strong excellent++ rating.  The reverse ricasso is matching etched with the firm’s last of three early style trademarks.  It features the company name Gebr. Heller stamped in block letters, appearing sideways just beneath the center ridge.  The blade shoulders could not fit the guards any better!  The runner marks are the norm!  The scabbard shell has a couple of pinhead sized dimples appearing to the reverse side.  The anodizing is the style having a copper color, grading 80%.  In addition, there is some age peppering to the reverse side.  The fitting are matching nickel with the upper having NO carrying signs while the lower has the common taps to all sides and the ball.  The four side screws are present, displaying period turning signs.  Affixed to the scabbard ring is an early, short brown leather hanger with early solid nickel hardware.  The leather exhibits wear and age, resulting in much color loss.  However, the leather remains very supple.  The snap clip is functional and is correctly NOT marked.  A NICE looking, out of the woodwork example!  Excellent.
