E-439  Early SA Dagger Without Hanger by F. Dick, Esslingen
This early example is produced by the famous firm of F. Dick and is marked with the earliest of the three known logos utilized by the firm.  The overall condition is CHOICE!  The fittings are the early solid nickel variety, having been cleaned by a previous owner.  The nickel hilt has good smooth surfaces and nice crisp edges.  There are a few marks to the hilt surfaces, but nothing that really takes away from the smoothness or appearance.  Upon closer examination, the upper fitting is marked with the caster’s mark ‘E’ and ‘W’ appearing on either side of the tang clearance hole while the lower fitting is unmarked.  NOT an unusual find, but NO worries here!  The lower reverse guard is Gau-stamped ‘Sw’.  The grip-to-guard fit is perfect!  The grip is the thinner style having a dark brown color with a high-contour ridge.  The entire surface maintains a very attractive varnish finish, which is definitely period done.  The SA runes button and grip eagle are masterly set.  The button has faint chipping to the enamel while the nickel finish displays a nice tarnish.  The nickel grip eagle is the high necked variety and exhibits faint wear to the bird’s highlights.  The BEAUTIFUL blade is a bright example displaying crisp edges and tip.  The in and out marks are on the light side which is an unusual find on early SA Daggers.  The crossgraining is intact at 100%.  The SA motto “Alles fur Deutschland” is nice and precise with 100% background burnishing.  What a look!  The blade grades mint-!  The reverse ricasso area has the horizontally positioned rectangular logo of this firm.  Inside and to the left of the rectangle is an arrow with the head pointing toward the company name, F. Dick.  Below and centered is the company location, Esslingen.  For your information, Esslingen is near the city of Stuttgart in Southern Germany along the Neckar River in the Wurtemberg district.  Lastly, the blade-to-guard fit is perfect!  The heavy scabbard shell is straight throughout!  The obverse and reverse sides exhibit pimpling and spiders to the lacquer and anodizing which rates approximately 90%.  The matching solid/nickel scabbard fittings are in VERY nice shape.  There is really NO carrying or storage wear to either fitting.  The ball has a couple of minor hits which have resulted in a faint seam split.  NO worries here!  The original domehead side screws are intact with all four showing turning marks.  There is NO short leather hanger!  A VERY choice example, especially on today’s market!  Strong excellent.
