E-442a Model 1936 Chained SS Dagger With Type I
Chain by Unknown Maker
This example is a mid-period piece that remains in CHOICE condition!
Folks, you’ll wait a long time to top this one! The guards are the
plated type having smooth surfaces, crisp edges, and believe it or not, precise
accent grooves. They remain bright and shiny throughout with the plating
grading 99%! There are a few mild surface scratches and the common mild
bubbling to the areas adjacent to the grip. Overly critical here!
The ebony grip is a very nice example indeed having a medium contour ridge with
a perfect fit to the grip. It exhibits very minor wear throughout with NO
shrinkage, grading near mint. The SS runes button is the convex type set
at approximately the 12:30 and 6:30 positions. The SS runes are the style
that touches the inner circle circumference (Volume IV, page 48, lower).
The aluminum grip eagle is the point behind the head variety. Due to the
placement, it shows much wear to the eagle’s head, chest and wing highlights
in addition to age soiling. The factory bright blade is a beauty, showing
little usage! It easily rates 100% crossgraining with light in and out
marks. The SS motto “Meine Ehre heist Treue” is totally crisp having
nearly 100% backgrounding to the frosted finish. The edges and tip remain
crisp! The blade shoulder perfectly fit the lower crossguard contour.
There are a few faint smudge marks to both sides, rendering a near mint- rating.
VERY NICE! The scabbard shell is one for the books! Gorgeous!
The shell itself is totally straight throughout with 100% anodized finish and
98% factory lacquer intact! Stunning! The scabbard fittings are
equally as nice as the shell! Naturally, they are the plated variety
having a matching appearance to the hilt. The upper fitting has the later
flared-out ends (Volume IV, page 133). There are a few minor surface
scratches and two pinhead sized dimples to the obverse side, which DO NOT take
away from the look or condition! The center mount has the later rolled or
rounded boarders being retained by a two side screws (Volume IV, page 141).
It has outstanding background pebbling highlighting the raised-out three
intertwined swastikas on each side with 100% plating intact with NO background
darkening, which is correct on a Type I chain. Finally, the lower fitting
displays mild surface scratches but NO dents or taps. The ball, on the
other hand, does shows mild taps to the bottom and sides. The chain is the
Type I variety having outstanding detail to the high relief skulls and sigrunne
remaining totally bright with 100% plating. The link background pebbling
matches the center ramp. The chain connector tabs are the heavy duty style
with complete plating (Volume IV, page 126). The Type I chain is always
equipped with the cutout cloverleaf device where you can partially view the
letter DRGM (Volume IV, page 127). The snap clip remains fully functional!
The reverse side of the first upper link is heavily stamped with the SS proof
(Volume IV, page 130). A FANTASTIC textbook example for the CONDITION
collector! Strong excellent.
