E-482a Hitler Youth Leader’s Dagger by E. &
F. Horster
This is a beautiful and very fine example that remains in FIRST RATE
condition! The silver plating grades 100%, in addition to having remnants
of the original factory lacquer. The pommel cap has fine line and rope
decoration running around the outer edge. At the top is a vaulted Hitler
Youth insignia featuring the swastika in the center. The cap is retained
by two domehead side pins that are untouched. The dark burnishing to the
cap recess areas is intact. The edges retain their crispness while the
surfaces are smooth. The grip is a wooden base covered with tightly
wrapped silver wire. There is NO shrinkage to the wood, accounting for the
wire tightness. The ferrule has a matching silver finish with 100%
plating. The aluminum crossguard has fine subtle shaping with the quillon ends
tipping upward slightly. The guard edges are crisp. The surfaces
display a few minor surface scratches. The roped pattern around the guard
edge has 100% of the background burnishing. The blade is a real beauty,
being mirror bright throughout and reflecting a quality nickel plated finish
that grades 100%. The obverse segment is etched with the HJ motto “Blut
und Ehre!” meaning “Blood and Honor!”. The etching is outstanding
retaining the fine contrast backgrounding, grading 100%. The edges and tip
is factory crisp. The blade easily grades mint-. The reverse ricasso
is etched with the small, closed RZM circle. Beneath is the Horster-assigned
RZM code, M 7/36 with the backgrounding rating 100%. The medium brown
pigskin leather washer is in place, rating near mint-. The scabbard shell
is straight throughout! It is a once-piece unit which simulates a separate
upper, center, and lower fitting. The upper and center fittings are
complete with smooth rounded eyelets and carrying rings. The fittings have
been partially cleaned, but still retain 100% of the silver plating. The
rope pattern matches the hilt and is cut into the surface around each of the
mounts. The upper mount features a pressed out detailed HJ eagle.
The bird has a swastika cut into his chest in addition to holding a sword in his
right talon and a hammer in his left. The throat is the only actual
separate fitting on the scabbard. It is retained by a reverse mounted
flathead screw that shows period turning signs. The original leather,
installed between the mounts, has a fine-grained, rich, blue-black color. It
shows NO wear/age just a couple of mild storage marks, grading mint-. An
absolutely CHOICE example! Mint-.
