E-490 Short Single-Etched Army Dress Bayonet With
Frog by Carl Eickhorn
This is a collectible single-etched example displaying wear/age
throughout! The hilt nickel plating retains its brightness to all sides,
grading an overall 98%. The pommel edges are semi-crisp exhibiting minor
nicks. The top surfaces have numerous hits, primarily confined in and
around the lug area. The obverse pommel surface contains faint scratches,
in addition to a few minor hits. The pommel spine must have been utilized
for a hammer, for it exhibits dozens of minor taps. The mortise button is
fully functional. The rifle slot still houses a nice red felt plug,
grading strong excellent to near mint. The black checkered grip plates are
crisp and in perfect condition, being retained by steel rivets having dressed
heads on the obverse side. The rivet heads show mild rust, which can
easily be cleaned. The blade is bright and shiny, grading excellent.
There are light/superficial scratches throughout the non-etched areas. The
blade displays minor sharpening. It is the short style with stepped blade
and narrow fuller. The blade is slightly loose, probably resulting from
the spine being utilized as a hammer. The obverse blade is etched with the
standard 3219 pattern utilized by Eickhorn featuring two closed-winged Wehrmacht
flanking eagles on either side of a ribbon adorned with oak leaves. Inside
the ribbon is the standard remembrance "Fur Erinnerung/an meine Dienszeit",
which translates to "In remembrance of my time in the Service".
The frosting is fine indeed, displaying minor runner marks. The reverse
blade is plain, with the exception of the ricasso which is etched with the
Eickhorn 1935-41 Squirrel trademark. The scabbard is straight to all
sides. The original black paint shows wear and age, in addition to having
numerous paint spiders on both sides. The paint rates 95%! The
original patent leather frog shows extensive heat crazing and age, grading good.
The reverse upper side contains two holes for mounted the frog to the wall.
Probably Veteran-done! A NICE place holder! Very good.
