E-490c Long Single Etched Dress Bayonet With Frog

This example not only has a great etching, but it still remains in
very collectible condition and is complete with the original black patent
leather frog. The nickel plated hilt exhibits much wear and age, grading
60% with the greatest amount of wear appearing to the reverse side of the pommel
and guard. In addition, the remaining plated areas contain light surface
scratches. The edges are semi-crisp, having minor marks throughout.
The mortise button is fully functional. The button houses what appears to
be an original red felt cloth material that is NOT the standard plug, but it
appears to be period done. The black checkered grip plates are crisp, with
the only flaw appearing to the reverse right edge approximately one inch above
the guard. The nickel plated steel rivets have dressed obverse heads
displaying minor wear to the highlights. The long nickel plated slab style
blade is the style having a wide fuller, and remains bright and shiny. The edges
and tip remain crisp! The in and out runner marks are the norm for a dress
bayonet. There are faint scratches along the reverse edge. The
obverse side contains a beautiful etching containing the standard two-line
remembrance “Fur Erinnerun / an meine Dienszeit”, meaning “For remembrance
of my time in service”. On each side of the remembrance appears highly
detailed oak leave sprigs with acorns. Finally, the end panels are adorned
with beautiful potted plants. The frosting throughout is magnificent!
The blade grades strong excellent+. A thin brown leather washer is in
place, rating a strong excellent. The long scabbard shell has a tiny hit
near the middle portion of the obverse side. The original black paint has
a shiny appearance, grading 80% with most of the wear appearing to the reverse
side. The bayonet lug is loose. There is an original to the piece
black patent leather frog attached to the scabbard. As is the case with
the over whelming majority of patent leather frogs, the leather shows much heat
crazing, grading very good. A NICE representative piece! Engraved
bayonets continue to be strong performers! Excellent.
