E-493a Short Postal Protection Dress Bayonet With
Frog by E. & F. Horster
This example was just purchased as part of a very small dagger
collection. The hilt fittings are nice and bright, having beautiful nickel
plating, grading 99%. The surfaces exhibit faint surface scratches here
and there. The edges remain crisp. The mortise button is fully
functional. The rifle slot is complete with the original red felt buffer,
showing a couple of moth tracks. The black checkered bakelite grip plates
are mint. They are mounted to the tang via two nickel plated rivets with
obverse dressed heads. The blade measures 7.5” in overall length and is
the style having a narrow fuller with stepped end. The heavy nickel
plating grades 100% with crisp edges and tip. The obverse ricasso is
etched with the famous Horster logo, consisting of double oval circles trapping
the company name and location E. & F. Horster / Solingen. Inside is
the large H with the smaller HS having the piercing sword. A small thin
light brown leather washer is intact. The blade grades mint. A
BEAUTY here! The scabbard shell is straight throughout. The original
black factory paint grades 98% with minor wear at the tip area. Being
conservative here! There is a black patent leather frog being in strong
excellent condition. It is a quality example with age lines throughout.
There is a split to the area running from the bayonet mounting lug to the top
edge. Now for the best part! Attached to the reverse lower portion
of the frog is a black metal plate affixed to the leather via four small rivets,
with the very top marked D.R.P. RARE find here! DON’T pass this
up, this type bayonet is extremely RARE!! Strong excellent.
