E-500 Red Cross Enlisted Man’s Hewer With Frog
by Unknown Maker
I purchased this example as part of a small military collection.
The entire Hewer has been cleaned by the previous collector to include the
blade, fittings, scabbard and frog. He did a pretty good job. The muted
nickel plated hilt fittings have a semi-shiny appearance with the plating
grading 97%. Clearly visible throughout the hilt are pinhead size
bubbling, which is a very common find on Hewer hilts. The pommel edges
contain some carrying/storage marks, as does the top surface. The black
bakelite grip plates are near mint with the obverse side being checkered, while
the reverse side is smooth surfaced. The obverse side retaining screws
have also been cleaned and appear unturned. The nickel plating to the hilt
grades 99%. Similar to the pommel, the guard exhibits tiny pinhead size
bubbling throughout. The crossguard medallion features the raised-out,
closed winged eagle clutching a Red Cross with the swastika vaulted outward on
the bird’s chest. The medallion edges and the top portion of the
swastika exhibit a couple of hits. The blade is the sawback style being
bright and shiny, while still retaining 100% gaining. The vicious looking
sawback is crisp throughout as is the blade edge and flat tip. There are a
few faint smudges to both sides rendering a strong excellent rating. The
obverse and reverse ricasso areas are VOID of any marking. A thick black
colored leather washer is present, grading mint-. The scabbard shell has a
crease to the middle of the reverse side. The original factory black paint
displays much wear/age and paint spiders, grading 80%. The scabbard
fittings perfectly match the look and condition of the hilt. The upper
fitting is really very nice with 100% plating and is retained to the shell via
two domehead side screws that are turned. The lower fitting has a couple
of tiny marks to the bottom edges and the obverse top edge. The plating
grades 90% with age peppering to the obverse side while the reverse side has
four areas of plating loss. The lower fitting is also mounted to the shell
via two domehead side screws with turned heads. Attached to the scabbard
is the original black leather frog. It is the four rivet style, displaying
MUCH wear/age and color loss along with extensive age cracks throughout.
The frog grades good at best! A NICE starter piece or for someone on a
budget! Very good.
