E-501a Red Cross
Enlisted Man’s Hewer Without Frog by Unknown Maker
This example was recently purchased from a “picker”.
Typical of most Red Cross Enlisted Man’s Hewers, this example shows mild wear
and age, while retaining 99% of the hilt and scabbard plating. The pommel
fitting is a nice one indeed! The top surface displays a couple of minor
carrying taps, while the edges exhibit faint carrying/storage marks. The
grip plates are the black bakelite style showing NO real wear/age. The
obverse example is checkered, whereas the reverse grip plate is smooth.
The plates are retained by the standard screw and spanner hardware. The
screw heads exhibit a light coat of rust which is more of the norm rather than
the exception on Red Cross Enlisted Man’s Hewers. In addition, the heads
have minor period turning signs. The matching crossguard has crisp edges
and smooth surfaces. The oval medallion eagle is precise and nicely
detailed featuring a highly vaulted swastika on the bird’s chest. The
blade remains bright and shiny in addition to having the blunted tip and a sharp
sawback spine. The crossgraining grades near mint. The obverse
ricasso is stamped with the patent pending mark, Ges. Geschutz. Finally,
there is a slight edge to the entire blade. A black colored washer is
present, grading strong excellent+. The blade to scabbard fit is nice and
tight. The scabbard shell is totally straight throughout with the
exception of a slight dimple to the reverse side. The original black paint
grades 98%, in addition to having a few faint paint spiders appearing to both
sides. The top and bottom fittings perfectly match the look of the hilt.
The top fitting is the style that is retained by two, side screws with the right
head showing mild period turning signs. The lower fitting is the
pressed-on variety exhibiting NO wear/storage marks. A VERY NICE example!
Strong excellent+.
