E-502 Red Cross Enlisted Man’s Hewer
The hilt fittings are in really GREAT condition retaining nearly 100%
nickel plating and 95% factory lacquer. The top pommel surface exhibits
some small carrying marks, as do the edges. The obverse checkered plate is
totally perfect, as is the reverse smooth style example. The plates are
retained with countersunk screws and spanners. The heads display minor
pimpling. The crossguard features a very fine obverse medallion showing a
fine eagle clutching a Red Cross having a fine vaulted swastika on his chest.
The blunted blade is a very nice example with 100% graining. The blade
edge and blunted tip remains factory crisp. There are a few minor smudges
and faint in and out marks. The ricasso areas are void of any maker’s
mark. The reverse ricasso is stamped in two lines “Ges. / Gesch.”.
The blade grades strong excellent! A medium sized dark brown leather
washer is present, grading near mint. The scabbard shell is totally
straight. The original black paint remains bright, grading nearly 95%.
There are extensive age spiders to the obverse side, while the reverse side has
a much smaller amount. The scabbard shell is fitted with nickel plated
mounts that perfectly match the look of the hilt. They are fitted to the
shell via four flathead side screws showing faint turning signs. A VERY
FINE example. Strong excellent.
