E-502a ULTRA RARE Water Protection Police Dagger
by Alcoso (Alcosa)
This is a very RARE model dagger and one that is missing from the
majority of today’s blade/sword collections! It had been originally
purchased at a garage sale by an old-time collector who retained it for quite a
number of years, until he recently offered it to me. This dagger is the Alcoso
variety having the large copper Police insignia affixed to the grip. What
a beauty! The fittings throughout are solid brass with nearly all the
original gilding gone to time. The finish throughout shows that 60+ year
old tarnished appearance. LOVE that look! The ball top pommel has
beautiful workmanship with outstanding detail to the reed and cattail motif.
The pommel shows minimal wear/age to the highlights. As is the case with
all Alcoso Naval pommels, this knob is distinguishable by its height. The
blue grip leather is a NICE example, displaying light wear to a few areas.
It is constructed over a wooden base and is tightly wrapped with thin twisted
brass wire. The copper grip eagle is the large solid type having the
open-wing style with very minor wear/age. Beautiful! The crossguard
is the Alcoso style having the unique reverse center block depiction of a
diamond (Volume III, page 296). In addition, the crossguard quillon
terminal has the squared block shape (Volume III, page 297). The blade
release button remains fully functional and is correctly the steel base style.
The double engraved blade is bright and shiny, having the beautiful sailing ship
depiction (Volume III, page 275, left). The edges and tip remain factory
crisp. The obverse and reverse ricasso areas exhibit minor surface
scratches, light in and out scratches, and age soiling in and around the red
felt washer. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the late style scales
trademark, having the horizontally-placed scales logo with the name to the right
Alcosa. The name is spelled with a small “a” at the end, which is
correct for this vintage piece. The letters interspersed in the scales are
“AWS NOT ACS” as seen on the earlier period pieces (Volume I, page 23
right). The scabbard is the lightning bolt variety displaying some
carrying/storage hits to both sides. It is NOT the Alcoso style which is
NOT unusual for a late-period Alcoso piece. After checking around, I found
an advanced blade collector, who nearly 36 years ago had purchased a late-period
Alcoso mint example directly from the Veteran and it too did not have an Alcoso
scabbard. NO worries! The scabbard throat is retained by two
domehead side screws that are unturned. A fine original example of a ULTRA
RARE dagger! DON’T pass this up! Strong excellent.
