E-506  Red Cross Enlisted Man’s Hewer With Frog by Unknown Maker
This fine example is a DIRECT Veteran purchase and not only remains in collectible condition, but it complete with the original Red Cross Enlisted Man’s Hewer Frog!  The entire Hewer shows minor carrying time/age.  The hilt fittings reflect 99% nickel plating with minor pinhead bubbling evident in a couple of spots.  The pommel edges are still crisp while the surfaces remain smooth.  The finish wear is confined to the top left pommel edge.  The grip is the black bakelite variety having some residue to the lower, obverse checkered area that should clean up nicely.  The reverse smooth plate contains a couple of faint scratches in addition to a small, curved scratch in and around the upper spanner area.  The plates are retained by two screws and spanners with the heads exhibiting mild, period turning signs and a light coat of rust.  The crossguard has fine medallions with the obverse side containing an art-deco Red Cross Eagle.  The breast of the bird depicts a vaulted swastika with the talons below grasping a Red Cross cross.  The nickel plating grades 100% while the edges are crisp and the surfaces smooth.  The blade is a beauty!  Hard to top this one!  It is of very heavy construction having the classic blunted tip and sharp back spine.  The blade is bright with full crossgraining.  The blade edge and blunted tip are crisp.  The blade easily grades near mint to mint-.  The reverse ricasso is stamped with the patent pending markings “Ges. Geschutzt”.  The thick light brown leather washer is intact, grading near mint.  The scabbard shell is totally straight.  The original black paint is nice and shiny, grading 99% with paint spiders dispersed on both sides with the greater percentage appearing to the obverse side.  The scabbard fittings are very nice with the nickel plating grading 99% with the wear appearing to the lower, obverse side.  The fittings are retained to the shell via two domehead side screws, which show mild turning signs that could be period done.  The original black leather frog has near mint leather having the four aluminum rivet construction.  The lower, obverse retaining leather that wraps around the shell has a brown tint.  The reverse side is NOT marked!  There is a ˝” mounting hole cut into the upper reverse area for mounting the Hewer on the wall.  Common Veteran finding!  A FINE example!  Strong excellent to near mint-.
